FAQs: What is an Archive?

FAQs is a new video series created by Bright Archives. In this series, we answer your most common questions about preservation, archives, oral history, and more. Each video features experts and highlights collections from archives, museums, and other cultural heritage organizations.

In our first video of the series, we answer the common question: "What is an archive?" We break down the concept in a simple and easy-to-understand way. You’ll learn about the different meanings of the word "archive," the important role archives and archivists play in preserving history, and how to access these valuable collections. We’ll also explore the gaps that may exist in archives and what they can teach us.

Joining us in the first video is Senior Archivist Sarah Hallett from the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Bright Archives produced “What is an Archive?” with support from the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
